As naturally occurring structural analogue glutamate, competes for the receptors with glutamate able pass blood-brain barrier exert its relaxation effect. review focuses on L-theanine, including animal models latest human trials as well potential molecular mechanisms regarding neuron stem cells. The biological efficacy dietary food matrix has been further discussed this relation physiological changes gastrointestinal tract bindings other components.

Seasonal Variation of L-Theanine Content in Tea: A Study on Darjeeling Black Tea

To date quality and selling price of a tea mainly depends on its flavour, taste and texture but not on its medicinal properties though a Chinese scientist in 780 AD suggested and acclaimed tea as a divine remedy and supreme gift of God for preserving mental tranquillity. Different studies have been showed that L-theanine is the key component of tea which can make us mentally calm, cool and rela...

L-Theanine reduces psychological and physiological stress responses.

L-Theanine is an amino acid contained in green tea leaves which is known to block the binding of L-glutamic acid to glutamate receptors in the brain. Because the characteristics of L-Theanine suggest that it may influence psychological and physiological states under stress, the present study examined these possible effects in a laboratory setting using a mental arithmetic task as an acute stres...

Neuroprotective effects of the green tea components theanine and catechins.

The neuroprotective effects of theanine and catechins contained in green tea are discussed. Although the death of cultured rat cortical neurons was induced by the application of glutamic acid, this neuronal death was suppressed with exposure to theanine. The death of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons caused by transient forebrain ischemia in the gerbil was inhibited with the ventricular preadmi...

L-theanine, a natural constituent in tea, and its effect on mental state.

Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water. Tea is known to be a rich source of flavonoid antioxidants. However tea also contains a unique amino acid, L-theanine that may modulate aspects of brain function in humans. Evidence from human electroencephalograph (EEG) studies show that it has a direct effect on the brain (Juneja et al. Trends in Food Science & Tech 1999;10;19...
